MORISOT – The Heart is a Rebel, investigates the intriguing life of forgotten female impressionist Berthe Morisot.
At a time when it was inconceivable for a woman to pursue a career, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), courageously followed her passion. As a painter she became one of the founding members of Impressionism. She was the only woman among them. Her male colleagues have become world famous, names like Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Sisley and Renoir. Berthe Morisot has remained relatively unknown.
In the film, director Klaas Bense goes, in France, in search of the origin of an unknown painting depicting Berthe Morisot. By means of his investigations, he sketches a lively and colourful portrait of the artist’s eventful life and discovers that she is a powerful source of inspiration for young women today
De documentaire Morisot – Moed, Storm en Liefde onderzoekt het intrigerende leven van de vergeten vrouwelijke impressionist Berthe Morisot.
Berthe Morisot is één van de grondleggers van het impressionisme, maar het feit dat ze een vrouw was stond een glansrijke carrière in de weg. Terwijl haar mannelijke collega’s Monet, Degas, Sisley, Pissarro en Renoir wereldberoemde kunstenaars zijn geworden is de Franse kunstschilder Berthe Morisot (1841 – 1895) vrijwel in de vergetelheid geraakt.
In de film gaat regisseur Klaas Bense in Frankrijk op zoek naar de herkomst van een onbekend schilderij waarop Berthe Morisot staat afgebeeld. Aan de hand van zijn zoektocht schetst hij een levendig en kleurrijk portret van een moedige vrouw met een grote passie, die gevangen zit in het strakke keurslijf van de sociale conventies in de 19e eeuw. De film ontdekt dat Berthe Morisot een krachtige inspiratiebron is voor jonge vrouwen vandaag.
